Custom thumbnails for Facebook Shares

We love sharing content at bravr. We regularily post content we produce on behalf of our clients across social media sites.

Our Facebook social media optimisation is extremely popular with some of our client facebook pages having over 5k likes from scratch.

When posting links on Facebook, it automatically fetches a thumbnail from the website, but sometimes its not the right image, this can be frustrating as the images Facebook chooses may not always reflect the content of the post.

Enter the Facebook Opengraph protocol which at first can look quite daunting for non-techhies, but the important meta tag we are looking for is this:

 <meta property="og:image" content="http://www.yoursite.com/i/your-thumbnail.png"/>

Place this somewhere in between your <head> and </head> and change the link to a thumbnail of your choice.

Now share the link to the page on Facebook and see the updated thumbnail of your choice appearing!

Note: If you or someone else has shared your URL before the thumbnail may not instantly update, this is because the thumbnails are cached by Facebook, so wait a day and try again.

Share this post on Facebook and you'll see our bravr logo appearing in the thumbnail
